2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony Commences Tonight in London

The 2012 Olympics official begin tonight in London, an event that seemingly could not have come sooner. $14 billion was spent in the 7-year preparation for these Olympics, London's first since 1948. Celebrated director Danny Boyle's painstakingly-orchestrated opening ceremony show will hopefully be loud enough to quiet the grumblings of Londoners and tourists alike.

Despite security concerns, an overwhelmed transit system and imposed spending cuts, the 2012 Olympic Games have arrived, and have brought with them the usual hope, celebrations and unity. And even if the settling in of the Olympic torch does little to quiet internal grumblings, Londoners will have to admit that this year's Olympics should prove to be a much happier one than the last time said torch took up position in their city, when London was host to the games in the midst of a world war.

Yes, these 2012 Olympics could occur in happier times, in a richer nation, or world, for that matter. But they are most certainly occurring in a more peaceful time, with more to celebrate, than the last time London hosted the Games. The same school of cynics that likely dubbed that Olympics as the "Austerity Olympics" have cleverly coined the 2012 Games as the "Recession Olympics". This writer, meanwhile, has but one hope for the 2012 Olympics: That for a couple of weeks we can all just shut up and watch some soccer.
